Pituitary Conditions

Importance of the Pituitary Gland

The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and is the “master control gland” that produces hormones affecting growth and the function of other glands in the body.

The most common cause of pituitary disorders is a pituitary tumor, but injury can also be a factor.

Symptoms of Pituitary Dysfunction

Possible signs of a pituitary tumor may include:

  • Headache
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Loss of body hair
  • Feelings of weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Infrequent or non-existent menstrual periods
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Unintended weight changes
  • Increased frequency/volume of urination

Treatment for Pituitary Conditions

Treatment of pituitary tumors requires a multi-disciplinary approach, calling upon a neurosurgeon, endocrinologist, and neurologist. Surgery, radiation therapy, and medications may be used individually or in combination to restore hormone production to normal levels.
